The beatitudes are a set of teachings given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, found in the Gospel of Matthew. They are a series of blessings that describe the characteristics and attitudes that are valued in the Kingdom of God. So, while the beatitudes contain blessings, they are not the same as blessings. The beatitudes are more like a set of guidelines for living a blessed and fulfilling life, while blessings are the actual state of being favored or receiving divine favor. **

Today, the Beatitudes might sound like this: "Blessed are those who stand up for justice, for they will see positive change. Blessed are those who show empathy and compassion, for they will find connection and understanding. Blessed are those who work for peace and reconciliation, for they will create a more harmonious world. Blessed are those who advocate for the marginalized and oppressed, for they will bring about equality and inclusion. Blessed are those who seek to live with integrity and authenticity, for they will find fulfillment and purpose." **

The pillar function of the Beatitudes in our time is to provide a moral and ethical framework for individuals to live by. They offer guidance on how to cultivate virtues such as humility, compassion, and righteousness in a world that is often marked by division and conflict. By embodying the values outlined in the Beatitudes, individuals can strive towards creating a more just and peaceful society. Ultimately, the Beatitudes serve as a timeless reminder of the importance of living a life centered on love, mercy, and justice. **

The Beatitudes are central at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount because they set the tone for the rest of Jesus' teachings in the sermon. They outline the characteristics and attitudes that Jesus values and blesses, such as humility, mercy, and righteousness. By emphasizing these qualities at the start of his sermon, Jesus is laying the foundation for the ethical and moral teachings that follow, and showing his audience the kind of heart and mindset they should have as they seek to live out their faith. The Beatitudes also challenge societal norms and expectations, calling for a radical shift in perspective and values, which makes them a powerful and thought-provoking introduction to the Sermon on the Mount. **
